The United Kingdom of Israel was formed under Kings Saul, David, and Solomon (as recounted in 1-2 Samuel and 1 Kings, in the Prophets). Its borders supposedly stretched from Egypt in the south, to the Mediterranean coast, into what is modern-day Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. The Bible tells that David conquered the city of Jerusalem and made it is his capital.

After the death of King Solomon (circa 925 BCE) the United Kingdom of Israel divided into the Northern Kingdom of Israel (whose new capital was eventually Samaria) and the southern Kingdom of Judah (whose capital was Jerusalem).
