The resources on this page are provided to give you a head start on researching your final project. Remember that pilgrimage is a living religious phenomenon, and you are as likely to find valuable information on your subject from an encyclopedia, a scholarly journal, a personal website, or the Los Angeles Times. While your resources are limitless, always remain aware of the type of source you are drawing on: you would not engage a personal website with the same critical apparatus as an 11th-century text or a 21st-century academic journal article.
Hopefully these resources will be updated throughout the quarter: if you have any difficulties, or come across an additional helpful link or resource, please let the professor know.
The "Virtual Hajj" (at the companion site to the PBS documentary "Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet"). This is a multimedia website with detailed descriptions and depictions of hajj at Mecca.
"The Jerusalem Archaeological Park" (digital reconstructions of biblical Jerusalem, with timelines, bibliographies, and essays: very hi-tech, do not try loading on a dial-up)
"Pilgrimage in India" (a tourist company with overviews of Hindu, Jain, Sikh, Christian, and Buddhist sites of pilgrimage in India)
"Places of Peace and Power: The Sacred Site Pilgrimage of Martin Gray" (Gray is a photographer, former Buddhist monk, and former owner of travel agencies who now operates slide shows and private research into sacred sites around the world: some beautiful pictures).
"Pilgrimage in Buddhist India: Pilgrims Guide, Buddhist Holy Sites" (from the image-rich and brightly informative Buddhanet, ostensibly for Buddhists, but very explanatory)
"Bibliography of Sacred Sites: List of Sources by Subject Area" (from Martin Gray's "Sacred Sites" website)
"Bibliography of Sacred Sites: Alphabetical List" (from Martin Gray's "Sacred Sites" website)
"Places of Secret Prayer: Pilgrimage to Twelve Sacred Places in Alabama" (Despite the extremely specific page title, the "back" pages of this site contain useful bibliographies and links)
Rodney Frey's "Sacred Journey" website bibliography (designed for an introductory course in religious studies, contains a lot of useful bibliography and resources about various religious traditions, sacred spaces, and pilgrimage)

You can use these databases to search for articles and essays in popular and academic publications. Most of these databases can only be accessed from a UCR computer. This list represents a handful of the resources available to do your research: be sure to skim through the full (and growing!) list of UCR databases at least once before you graduate. (note: Links to databases have been removed from the archived version of this website.)
