DEBATES

On April 27, the class will hold a debate. The class will be divided randomly into "pro" and "con" teams.

The topic for the debate is:

Resolved: It is worthwhile to study religion.

On May 9 (with final papers) students must turn in a 500-1000 write-up of the debate, explaining the following:

Debate Rules:

1. Debaters may only use materials we have explored in class. No outside sources should be used to make an argument.

2. Everyone on a debate team must participate in whatever capacity the team decides (speaking, preparation, support during debate, etc.), but they do not necessarily have to speak during the debate. The only limits on a team's argument are the time limits imposed by the format of the debate, outlined below.

3. Written notes may be used during the debate.
4. Additional materials (visuals, handouts, charts, etc.) may not be used during the debate.

Debate Format:

10 minutes: Pro side lays out main points to defend the resolution

10 minutes: Con side lays out main points to refute the resolution

10 minutes: Break to prepare rebuttals

5 minutes: Pro side rebuttal

5 minutes: Con side rebuttal

5 minutes: Break for team consultations

10 minutes: Teams pose direct questions to each other (alternating questions, con asks first)

5 minutes: Break for judges’ final consultation and vote
