The Bible recounts that Abraham originally came from Mesopotamia, and then settled in the land called "Canaan" (on the coast of the Mediterranean). Abraham, his son Isaac, and Isaac's son Jacob all supposedly married female relatives from back in Mesopotamia. Jacob and his sons left Canaan during a famine and settled in Egypt.
