The Roman Empire came to power around the first century CE (about the time Jesus was born), and stretched from the Western Mediterranean (modern Spain) through the old kingdoms of Alexander the Great to the border of Mesopotamia. It lasted to this extent for close to 400 years. The eastern half of the Empire lasted, in some form or another, until 1453.
